kuta, bali.

It's about time I let you in on our adventures in Bali. Sorry for the delay!! I've been out having more adventures and trying to educate the youth of Thailand.

Anyways, Kuta, Bali was our first stop on our Indonesian adventure. After our trip, Kuta was definitely the least scenic and least exciting, but man it was nice to eat lots of western food and soak in western luxuries for the first couple of days. Kuta was the place we were told to quickly avoid, but we had to see what it was all about. The airport was a short drive from downtown Kuta, so we figured that Kuta would just be a good starting point for us and it really was! After flagging down a metered taxi--Bluebird Taxi--we headed into Kuta. The non-metered taxis tried charging us almost 80% more than a metered taxi! Scams scams scams! Anyways, driving through Kuta felt like we had returned to civilization. Westernization everywhere. There were tourists galore, but it wasn't too bad--except on the beach. The beach was packed full of tourists, surfers and people trying to get you to buy stuff. The beach was definitely not picturesque, especially compared to the other beaches we were about to see. Stephan surfed for a bit our first full day, but by time he got out in the ocean the waves were dying down and the crowds were picking up. So, that being said, we enjoyed Kuta for the food. We stuffed our faces with the best Greek falafels, Greek salad, burritos, healthy breakfasts and yummy fruit shakes. It was just the food we had been craving. We enjoyed our first Bali sunset in Kuta and of course it was breathtaking, but everyone else in the entire town decided to take our idea too. I thought it was such an original idea to go see the sun set in Bali. Who woulda thunk.

Our plans for the rest of the trip were planned out over a yummy Starbucks iced cappuccino. We wanted to go to the Bukit Peninsula which is the eastern most point of Bali. Stephan had read that this was the best place to go for surfing. My dear friend also recommended this area for surf and the scenery. Our dilemma was mainly trying to figure out how to get there. We thought about renting a motorbike, but had already seen how crazy the traffic was and plus we really had no idea how to get there. We were also just thinking about going there for a day trip. But then it dawned on us to just find a metered taxi and have them take us safely, comfortably and directly to where we wanted to go. Best idea. We also brought our bags with us, which too was the best idea. We rented a motorbike once we got to the area and we decided we had to stay for more than one day. So we did. And more on that in my next post!
