language camp.
Stephan and I came to Thailand through an agency. The agency left us stranded too many times to mention. They wanted us to help them with an English Language Camp at one of the local schools in Hat Yai. We were not informed about the camp until 11pm the night before. I was so nervous because I thought I needed to scurry through my TEFL course and try to relearn everything that I learned in 3 months. Luckily, we found out that we only needed to play games with the kids and that they had the games planned for us. Stephan and I got to teach the same group of kids and it was awesome!! The kids spoke very little English but we played a weird version of bingo that just used the basics. It went like this “Do you have Facebook” and if the student had Facebook then they would have to jump up and say “BINGO”. The students were painfully shy, so we basically had to go around the circle of 40 kids and ask them each question personally. We had four different groups of 40 students and we had to play the game each time for an hour. It got so tiring, that Stephan and I decided to just start doing our own thing. So first we played “Simon Says” then the “Hokie Pokie” and then “Mr. Fox, What time is it?”. We should have played those games from the beginning. The kids were much more enthused. The teachers at the school were sweethearts. They had lunch for us which consisted of…you got it RICE! Well, egg and vegetables as well. The agency also told us where we would be placed this day over lunch. The lady that works with the agency, that was with us that day, pulled out a crumbled sheet of paper with scribbles on it and read out where each of us would be placed. Luckily, Stephan and I got placed in Nakhon Si Thammarat. We both wanted this location and felt so relieved when she told us. The location was probably the only good thing we got out of our agency, but we’ll save that for later.
